10th Purley (St. Mark’s) Guides



The 10th Purley Guides was established over 60 years ago and is still going strong, despite facing changing attitudes of young people towards such organisations.

Due to the dedication of all the leaders who have been involved with the unit, it has successfully evolved into a modern vibrant group offering young girls the chance to challenge themselves in a variety of ways, and build solid friendships that will last for years.

However, at the heart of Guiding, still remain solid core values incorporating the Promise and Law. Keeping some of the older values ensures that the girls learn to respect others, themselves and the world they live in.

Incorporating off-site activities is always an important part of our programme. With this in mind, over the last few months the girls have taken part in scuba-diving, hiking at night, kayaking, raft building, rock climbing, crate challenge, caving, ice skating, circus skills and a survival weekend! We must not forget the highlight of each year: the summer camp! The girls sleep under canvas for a week, take part in a wide range of challenges and enjoy getting back to nature!

As in years past, badges still form a part of the Guiding Programme. We believe that all young people should be given the opportunity to learn the life enhancing skills that the badges incorporate.

However, most importantly, Guides is aimed at having fun, playing games, making new friends and generally having a good time!

Many of the Guides at St Marks join at the age of 10 and do not leave us until they are 16! Quite a few have then stayed on to become Young Leaders and some have even stayed beyond that to become Guide Leaders themselves
