Women's Circle at St Mark's

Meetings: 3rd Wednesday of each month (except August) 12.30 for 1pm in the Church Hall

Aims: Friendship, Service, the Christian Way of Life

History: The Women’s Circle started around 1960 and before then was known as the Young Wives and Mothers Fellowship.  The original intention was for members to move on to the Mother’s Union and Women’s Guild on reaching the age of 40 or when their youngest child reached 14.  For various reasons many were reluctant to make the move and so the then incumbent, Revd, Philip Smith, suggested a change of name enabling the inclusion of all women of whatever age or marital status, as well as women from other churches, or none. Meetings used to take place in the old “Iron Church” hall but in 1968 moved to the present hall.  Meetings used to begin with a short service in Church but the format now is to start with a ‘Thought For The Day’ type reading and a prayer, followed by lunch and a guest speaker.  Food has always played a big part and there are special lunches at Christmas and in July.  Total membership is 45.

Women’s Circle Prayer

Lord, give us grace –
To worship you with all our heart
To love our neighbour as ourselves
To be at one in caring for your World
To know your peace in our lives.  Amen
